Stay safe on spring break with these reminders from University Police

Whether you’re traveling for spring break or using the time to relax at home, the WVU Police Department is offering tips to help ensure you have a safe experience.

Lock up before you leave.

Before you leave town, don’t forget to ensure all windows and doors are locked in your residence and vehicle. Make sure valuable items are out of plain sight, and record serial numbers for larger electronic items you are unable to travel with.

Travel smart.

If you’re going out of town, share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member, and always keep your phone charged.

Stay alert.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and limit distractions as much as possible. Keep valuable belongings in a safe place, and avoid leaving items unattended in public spaces.

Drink responsibly.

If you are participating in activities that involve alcohol, stick with one type of alcohol to moderate how much you consume, pace drinks to one or fewer per hour, and alternate alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages. You should also always have an eye on your drink. Never set your drink down or give it to someone else to hold.

Stick with a group.

Utilize the buddy system when out and about to help prevent someone from ending up in an unsafe situation and have a plan for your group to get home safely, whether it’s a ride-sharing app, designated driver, taxi, or walking.

Safety comes first, Mountaineers. We’ll see you back on campus soon!
