Mission Statement
At West Virginia University, the University Police Department's ultimate mission is to work with students, faculty, staff and visitors to maintain a safe environment for all. To do so, University Police will work with the campus community in solving problems using a community-building approach and will strive to handle all calls with that object in mind. University Police will take proactive steps to further WVU's educational mission as a land-grant institution and to foster an environment where members of the University community feel comfortable approaching University Police to assist in resolving issues.
In appropriate situations, University Police will strive to work in conjunction with other administrators at the University or members of the community as necessary to enhance the community-building approach to problem solving.
And while a function of University Police is law enforcement, our primary goal is keeping the University community safe. University Police does not derive its budget from ticketing, restitution, forfeitures or other law enforcement functions. Because of that, University Police's focus is on ensuring that when students come to get an education, faculty go to teach or research, staff come to work, and visitors are on campus, they are safe.
