WVU has adopted a University-wide policy that prohibits hazing, both by individuals and by recognized student organizations. This policy is defined as “prohibited conduct” under the Campus Student Code. The Campus Student Code establishes jurisdiction, processes, prohibited conduct, interim measures, sanctions and appeals processes.
Importance of Preserving Information
In cases of hazing, it is important for a person who may have been subjected to such conduct (“Complainant”) to seek immediate medical attention to determine the presence of physical injury, and, if the Complainant later decides to pursue legal options, to obtain evidence to assist in criminal prosecution or a civil action.
Additionally, any documentation (photos, videos) of the allegation(s) that exist should be preserved.
Where and How to Report the Incident
Any person having knowledge of or who wants to self-report any activity or conduct that may constitute hazing is encouraged to do so and can report their concerns to the WVU Police Department at 304-293-3136.
Allegations of hazing can also be reported to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities ( 304-293-8111); Fraternity and Sorority Life ( 304-293-8201); or the WVU Division of Campus Engagement and Compliance ( 304-293-5600).
The Clery Campus Security Authority (CSA) reporting form can be used to report hazing for inclusion into the WVU Annual Security Report, but, if you wish to report the incident for investigation, please use one of the aforementioned reporting structures.
Any allegation of hazing will be referred to the WVU Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for review, investigation and sanctioning, when applicable. In cases where the University Police were not the initial report takers, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities will share the complaint with University Police for investigation, and, after investigation, University Police will file criminal charges, when applicable.
