Understanding the Crime and Fire Log

Case Number Prefixes

Prefixes appearing at the beginning of case numbers included in the Crime and Fire Log have specific meanings. View descriptions of each prefix:

  • Case numbers that don't include a prefix or start with a year (e.g., #23-XXXXX): Cases that were completed by a WVU Police officer

  • SR: Security reports that were completed by a WVU Campus Safety Officer

  • CSA: Incidents that were reported directly to the Clery Act Coordinator via the Campus Security Authority online reporting form

  • CRS: Clery-requested statistics that were obtained by the Clery Act Coordinator and are criminal incidents that were reported to have occurred either on campus, a noncampus building or property, public property or within the patrol jurisdiction of WVU Police.

    • CRS cases are populated upon review of Clery Act statistic requests from outside agencies or cases reported by non-law enforcement departments at WVU.

    • Examples of these cases could include Morgantown Police issuing an underage consumption citation on North High Street or Title IX receiving a sexual assault report occurring in student housing that was not reported to police and, when applicable, handled through University administrative processes.

    • Many times, these incidents are reported with limited information and may not contain some of the required Crime and Fire log information, such as an exact date or time. In these cases, the date of the incident will automatically default to January 1 of the reporting year and the time will default to 00:00.
