Behind the Badge: Meet UPD’s Rick Kelly

The WVU Police Department is taking you “Behind the Badge” to introduce our campus community to the dedicated police officers, campus safety officers and dispatchers who keep our University safe.

A valued member of the UPD team, Rick Kelly’s law enforcement career began in an unexpected place at an unexpected time – Anchorage, Alaska, at age 53.

Originally from Bruceton Mills, Rick entered the military at 17 years old and served for nearly 27 years in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic and First Sergeant. He retired in 2010 and returned to West Virginia before relocating to Alaska in 2011.

Rick made a career change a few years later and joined the Anchorage Police Department as a patrol officer. He returned to West Virginia in 2020 and spent over two years working for the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department before bringing his experience to the WVU Police team.

Outside of work, Rick enjoys a variety of sports and outdoor activities. He values spending quality time with his dogs, family, and friends and continues to bring his strong work ethic and unique experiences to his role on the UPD team.

UPD is grateful to have Rick as part of the team! Thank you for your service, Rick.
