UPD welcomes new K-9 to explosives detection unit

The WVU Police Department is adding a new four-legged friend to its ranks. Chuck, a yellow Labrador retriever born in February 2023, joined the department this month to serve as a specially trained explosives detection K-9.

Explosives detection K-9s serve our campus community and the surrounding Morgantown area by sniffing out venues for potentially suspicious items before large events. UPD K-9s regularly aid the WVU Athletics Department before home football and basketball games by performing searches in and around Milan Puskar Stadium and the Coliseum.

Outside of their police duties, K-9s live with their handlers and create special bonds with all they meet. Officer Ethan Stepp serves as Chuck’s handler.

“Explosives detection K-9s are a critical part of our department and help protect our community in so many ways,” said Chief Sherry St. Clair. “We are excited to have Chuck on our team and welcome you to say hi if you see him on campus.”
