About Us

To enhance the quality of life in our community, the West Virginia University Police Department commits to preventing crime, preserving the peace and protecting lives and property by enforcing the laws of our state in a just, impartial and equitable manner.

Our Divisions

Since 1961, the West Virginia University Police Department has been a 24/7 police department dedicated to serving and protecting our campus community and its students, faculty, staff and visitors. Led by Chief Sherry St. Clair, the department operates with up to 49 state-certified and sworn police officers, a group of campus safety officers, a full-service communications center and support staff.

The University Police Department prioritizes community policing initiatives to allow officers to engage with people outside of law enforcement settings. Our officers are often seen on campus, at events and around the city of Morgantown. Officers play a central role in promoting proactive safety messaging and providing training and support to our community.

University Police officers are state-certified and sworn police officers that exercise the same authority as all other law enforcement agencies under West Virginia law. Our department responds to calls for help of varying levels across University property.

The WVU Police Department is deeply committed to WVU's core values:

  • Service
  • Curiosity
  • Respect
  • Accountability
  • Appreciation
